Nature painting on the wall of Conference Centre

Imagine watching day turn into dawn as the lingering sun disappears … finally gazing at a star filled sky, so bright, so beautiful … with the only sounds disturbing the silence of a magic Marico-Bushveld night the call of a night jar … a jackal, the eternal chirping of crickets and the croacking of frogs down at the pond.   View from Klein Marico Poort

Marico Environmental Education Centre

Marico Environmental Education Centre is multi-cultural and situated in the peaceful Marico bushveld, 6 km outside the town of Zeerust.

The terrain with accommodation is situated on a game farm.  The area is famous for its incredible sunsets and natural beauty.  The programme based on a menu system is sent out to the different schools prior to their visit.  The programme is then compiled by well-trained environmental educationists interrelated with the curricula of the school, with emphasis on practical fieldwork.  It provides for a hands-on experience and the opportunity to study the interrelationships between nature and man.  It is a different experience for the child to track animal on foot and getting really close to the smaller things in nature.  Opportunities are provided for visiting staff members and pupils to take part in practical projects such as erosion control, upgrading of the veld for pasture and game census and to study different cultures and very old ruins of an early settlement.

There is also the opportunity to sleep out for the night in a veld camp with adequate facilities.  The centre welcomes any other groups such as hikers, sport clinics, church groups etc.

In conclusion, let us quote Herman Charles Bosman when he says:

"There is no other place that I know that is so heavy with atmosphere,

so strangely and darkly impregnated with that stuff of life

that bears the authentic stamp of South Africa."
